Constant spotting, heavy periods, bloating, mood changes and night sweats in early onset perimenopause

Client: Helena, female, age 40
Occupation: Stay-at-home mum of four
Package: 6 month Balance Your Hormones Package
Main Concerns: Heavy periods, constant spotting, bloating, fatigue, night sweats, extreme mood changes
Goals: Understand her hormonal shifts, fuel her exercise better, and feel physically and mentally strong again

Before We Started

When Helena came to me, she was feeling out of balance in every sense. Her once-regular periods had become extremely heavy and erratic, with near-constant spotting all through the month. She was bloated, flat in mood, low in energy, and struggling to feel like herself. All this, and she had four young children to care for on top.

Despite a nutritious-looking diet and a solid fitness routine (5–6 exercise sessions a week), she felt frustrated by sudden symptoms that seemed hormone-related but were hard to make sense of. With four young children and very little time for herself, her body was waving the red flag.

What We Discovered

Through functional testing and a full nutritional review, we found:

  • Low ferritin and folate levels which are linked to both heavy bleeding and poor energy

  • A hormone pattern and symptom picture suggestive of early perimenopause

  • Signs of poor iron absorption, possibly driven by dropping oestrogen

  • An under-fuelled diet for the level of exercise and output she was doing

  • A link between sugar cravings, energy dips, and afternoon fatigue

  • Emotional eating patterns triggered by stress, tiredness, or overwhelm

Together, these were placing extra pressure on her reproductive, metabolic, and nervous systems.

The Plan

We worked across three key areas:

1. Reproductive Hormone Support

  • Boosted absorption of iron, folate and B12 to counteract deficiency and support hormone function

  • Tailored meals around her cycle to manage cravings and improve mood stability

  • Added iron-friendly nutrients and adjusted timing to optimise absorption

2. Metabolic and Energy Support

  • Balanced her plate with more protein, healthy fats, and fibre to reduce sugar spikes and support lean muscle

  • Optimised breakfast and lunch to fuel her morning workouts and minimise afternoon energy crashes

  • Reduced reliance on processed snacks and sugary/sweetened drinks, focusing on hydration and blood sugar balance

3. Lifestyle and Nervous System Reset

  • Introduced calming routines in the evenings to help with sleep quality and mood

  • Created more flexibility in her nutrition to avoid the “all or nothing” approach

  • Helped her tune into patterns, recognising when overexertion caused symptoms to return, and how to rebalance quickly

The Results

By the end of our work together, Helena had made a complete turnaround. We scored her symptoms at the beginning and the end of the 6 months and this was how the scores changed (10 = worst it could be, 0 = best it could be):

  • Heavy periods: reduced from 7/10 → 3/10

  • Bloating: 6/10 → 0/10

  • Night sweats: 4/10 → 2/10

  • Mood changes: 6/10 → 3/10

By the end of the programme, Helena had completely turned a corner, her energy was back, she no longer needed naps or relied on sugar boosts, and by week 8 her bloating and night sweats had disappeared. Her constant spotting had literally disappeared and her periods on the whole became far more manageable. She felt genuinely empowered by the changes, confidently building balanced meals and recognising early signs of imbalance before they escalated. From the outside, she looked noticeably brighter and more at ease, and the shift in her mood and energy was clear. As she put it, “I feel like I understand my body now… this is the first time I’ve felt in control again.”
